Why This Matters

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia is made up of many distinct peoples, each with their own culture, language and laws. Your suburb sits on one of their Countries.

Whose Country am I on?

The AIATSIS Map of Indigenous Australia shows the general locations of the language, social and nation groups of Aboriginal Australia. It isn’t meant to be exact and the boundaries aren’t fixed, so treat it as the start rather than the answer.

The surest local answer is usually closer to home: many council websites carry an acknowledgement naming the Traditional Owners of your area, and land councils can help where research is still ongoing.

How to do this

  1. Find your area on the AIATSIS Map of Indigenous Australia.
  2. Check your council’s website for its acknowledgement.
  3. Learned the name? Hold onto it. Done.
