Help keep your op shop donations out of landfill

The op shops' own guide to what helps and what costs them.

5-10 minutes

Why This Matters

Donations op shops can’t use cost their charities millions in landfill fees each year. And about half the people who leave goods outside a shop or donation bin don’t realise those items often get binned.

Before your next clear-out

Not everything donated to an op shop makes it to the shelf. Some of it ends up as rubbish the charity has to pay to get rid of. A few small habits on your end decide which way your donation goes.

One thing the guide won’t tell you: if it still works but you doubt the op shop could sell it, hand it straight to someone who could use it instead.

How to do this

  1. Open Charitable Reuse Australia’s donation guide.
  2. Read the what, when and how.
  3. Note the one rule you didn’t know. Done.
