Switch off the devices nobody's using

One lap around the house, switching off whatever's sitting on standby.

5-15 minutes

Why This Matters

Anything left on standby keeps drawing power around the clock. In a typical home that’s 5 to 10 percent of all electricity used, costing up to $250 a year.

The little lights are a giveaway

The console in rest mode, the TV on standby, the set-top box, the desktop asleep. They are all still silently drawing power. Anything you’re not using today is fair game. If something switches off completely, it’s fine left plugged in.

How to do this

  1. Start at the TV cabinet. The biggest draws live there.
  2. Shut each one down, then switch off at the wall.
  3. No wall switch? Pull the plug.
  4. Then the rest of the house, room by room. Done.
