Leave a gap in the circle

One to keep in mind, so anyone nearby feels welcome to join the group.

1-5 minutes

Why This Matters

Closed circles say “we’re full” without anyone meaning it. An open one says there’s room, and nobody has to say a word.

The Pac-Man rule

Next time you’re standing around in a group, angle yourself so there’s room for one more. After a meeting, at a barbecue, the school pickup, or even just the kitchen at work.

Once you see it

It’s called the Pac-Man rule, after the shape a circle makes with one mouthful missing. Once you’ve heard it, you can’t unsee a closed circle.

Hard to plan for?

That’s the nature of it. Keep it in mind, and if there’s a gathering coming up, set a reminder for the day.

How to do this

  1. Notice the circle you’re standing in.
  2. Half a step back, and turn out a little.
  3. Leave the gap open, whether or not anyone takes it. Done.
