Ask your council to plant a street tree

The tree, the planting and the upkeep all cost you nothing.

15-25 minutes

Why This Matters

A street tree is a decades-long fixture: shade over the footpath, a cooler street in summer, food and shelter for birds.

Room for a tree?

Is there a bare stretch of nature strip on your street? Street trees are the council’s to plant, but most will take a request.

Every council does this differently: usually a request form, sometimes a phone call. The species and the spot are their call, since pipes, powerlines and footpaths all get a say, and planting usually waits for the cooler months.

How to do this

  1. Search your council’s name plus “request a street tree”.
  2. Open their request page. Some councils ask you to ring.
  3. Name the spot you have in mind.
  4. Put in your request. Done.
